Curbing Sugar Cravings Without Depriving Yourself

We believe that cold turkey only belongs on sandwiches and salads, so it should be no surprise that we think cutting things like sugar out of your diet needs to be done in small, conscious steps. The Strong4Me Fitness Program was built with the understanding that life happens and nobody is perfect. If you can make small changes every day, your thought patterns begin to change. When you tell yourself you can’t have sugar it can become an all consuming craving, by reframing your relationship with sugar, or other junk foods, you can begin to make better choices and eventually cravings can be managed and may disappear completely.

Too much sugar is a bad, bad thing!

Sugary treats can seem like heaven-on-earth, but we all know that sugar isn’t good for us. It’s fake energy that causes dramatic crashes that can be harmful for our metabolism and our mindset. Worse, sugar is the main culprit when it comes to quick and dirty weight gain.

When we begin to realize how harmful sugar can be for the body the temptation to give it up altogether can seem reasonable. However, going cold turkey can often to failure. Enlisting a few tricks and leaning toward the side of moderation can help you curb your cravings without feeling deprived.

Smooth sailing in the mornings

Rather than tipping the sugar into your coffee in the morning, try beginning the day with a smoothie. This can fill you up and does wonders for quelling sugar cravings. Just toss your favorite fruits and leafy greens into the blender and go to town. You can add spinach, berries, bananas, yogurt, and even avocado, if you want a smoother, creamier drink. The glucose in fruit is sugar of course, but the whole fruits also provide valuable vitamins and fiber that can help get you off on the right foot even if you’ve got a sweet tooth, and fill you with energy to take on your day!

Fruits and veggies provide natural sweetness that can help to curb cupcake cravings. They’re also full of filling fiber that slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Some soft drinks and iced coffees contain more sugar than a typical chocolate bar! Carbonated waters are a great way to “trick” your tastebuds into thinking they’re getting a sweet treat. Adding chunks of your favorite fruits can be refreshing and add the sweetness that your craving without the extra calories! Using natural sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit can be a good way to enjoy sweets without the harmful effects of sugar too.

Sweetness in savory foods

Cutting back on sugar without feeling deprived takes some creativity, but in the end, the benefits are incomparable. Little things, like taking the time to caramelize onions before adding additional ingredients to a meal can add a much-desired hint of sweetness. Substituting roasted red peppers for tomatoes in a soup or stew can do the same thing.

Mindfulness
